Binance hacker splits $1.4 billion of bitcoin into 19 wallets that no one can freeze
The attacker who drained Binance late on Thursday broke 18,270 stolen bitcoin into 19 separate piles within minutes, then left them alone.
At 20:20 UTC, Binance’s hot wallet sent just over 18,270 $BTC to one address in 11 transactions, all confirmed in block 973,732. A hot wallet is the internet-connected wallet an exchange uses to pay out customer withdrawals. The coins were worth about $1.4 billion at early Friday prices, or more than two and a half times the 7,000 $BTC Binance lost in its 2019 hack (though bitcoin traded under $5,000 at the time).
The transactions that split the coins up were confirmed in block 973,732 too, right after the deposits into the receiving address. CoinDesk followed every output using mempool.space data. The coins went through a so-called peel chain, where each transaction carves 1,000 $BTC off into a fresh address and passes the rest to the next hop. Some leftovers were merged back together and split again. One last sweep gathered the odd amounts into a wallet holding 832.5 BTC.
Twenty-eight minutes later, in block 973,738, a final 437.7 $BTC landed in a 19th address. Seventeen wallets now hold exactly 1,000 $BTC each, one holds 832.5 $BTC and one holds 437.7 BTC. As of 04:23 UTC Friday, none of the 19 had sent a single coin.
He Yi: Recharge is operating normally, and it is expected to resume withdrawals within 48 hours
On October 30, Binance co-CEO and co-founder He Yi published an update on service progress: deposits are unaffected and are still operating normally. The team is working on improving withdrawal services and related address controls, and it is expected that withdrawal services will begin to resume within the next 48 hours.
He Yi stated that further progress will be continuously updated through official Binance channels. Prior to this announcement, Binance had suspended withdrawals due to a security incident, and He Yi had previously stated that user funds are safe, and the platform will bear the related losses.
Multiple Polymarket users claim assets were transferred without authorization, suspected front-end compromise
Polymarket trader Car posted on X that approximately $800,000 in assets from his Polymarket account were stolen, all positions were liquidated, and his friend’s account was stolen for about $600,000, and he warned users to lock their accounts and avoid interacting with the site for now. Several other users reported on X and in the Polymarket Discord community that the site frontend appears to have been attacked and assets were transferred without authorization; some users said about $200,000 was stolen, and other users said they received unauthorized withdrawal signature requests on the official website.
As of the time of publication, Polymarket has not yet responded. In June of this year, Polymarket suffered a frontend phishing attack due to a third-party vendor being compromised, and about $2.94 million in user assets were stolen.
