On August 5, 2026, He Xing, Vice President and Head of the Truck Business Unit at Pony AI, announced at a media briefing that the company's fourth-generation Robotruck has officially come off the production line at Sany Heavy Truck's facility. Simultaneously, the first L4-level unmanned light-duty truck has entered real-world operational testing. This marks a formal transition for Pony AI's truck business from the "validation phase" into the "scaling phase," with a target of deploying 500 to 1,000 heavy trucks over the next two to three years and using light-duty trucks to drive a steep growth curve in the urban distribution market.

Where the journey began

According to Zhitong Finance, Pony AI's truck story began in 2018. The team initially purchased vehicles directly from a heavy truck dealership and spent over six months validating the technical feasibility of using a single codebase to drive both large and small vehicles. He Xing admitted that this type of demo-level modification posed a "significant hurdle" for large-scale operations. Pony AI's dual strategy of developing both Robotaxi and Robotruck businesses has long attracted market attention. At the briefing, He Xing provided quantitative answers to external questions for the first time: the code reuse rate between heavy trucks and Robotaxis exceeds 80%, while hardware reuse (sensor types and model support) exceeds 90%. The reuse rate between light-duty trucks and Robotaxis is even higher, surpassing 90%. This "super synergy" means that the data, safety validation, and 24/7 operational experience accumulated by Robotaxis in complex urban environments can be directly transferred to the truck business. He Xing noted that the complexity and data density of urban scenarios are far higher than those on highways, and Robotaxi iteration efficiency directly raises the capability ceiling of the entire autonomous driving system. In turn, the truck business, with its experience in long-haul routes and port operations, provides a comprehensive complement to the system.

Core application scenarios

He Xing also outlined the core application scenarios for Pony AI's Robotruck business, which primarily focus on long-haul logistics, platooning for bulk cargo, and port operations. "For long-haul logistics, the company plans to first create a 'demonstration field for unmanned heavy trucks' on national landmark long-distance routes. By leveraging national strategies for intelligent driving on major corridors and cross-provincial mutual recognition of autonomous driving permits, we will gradually establish the business model," He Xing revealed. For a route like Beijing to Guangzhou, which spans 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers one way, human drivers are limited by physiological constraints, requiring logistics companies to assign two or three drivers in shifts. An unmanned heavy truck, however, can operate 24 hours a day, achieving a breakthrough in time efficiency.

Expanding into urban delivery

Alongside heavy trucks, Pony AI is advancing its L4-level unmanned light-duty truck for urban distribution. This product is positioned as a "new benchmark for unmanned urban delivery," with a cargo volume of 18 to 20 cubic meters, a battery capacity of 100 to 140 kWh, and a range of 320 to 450 kilometers. It can operate at 70 km/h on city roads and at higher speeds on expressways. Product head Xiao Ping noted that there are approximately 14 million motor vehicles in urban logistics, with 4.2-meter light-duty trucks accounting for about 8 million, making them the dominant vehicle type. Compared to low-speed unmanned logistics vehicles with 5 to 6 cubic meters of cargo space on the market, Pony AI's light-duty truck offers generational advantages in "volume, speed, range, and cost," with per-kilometer freight costs potentially 50% lower than traditional solutions. The vehicle has already formed substantive partnerships with major logistics and express delivery groups and is currently undergoing real-world operational testing. He Xing predicted that once the permit system path is validated, the light-duty truck business will see a "very steep upward curve" next year and the year after.

Policy and regulatory outlook

Regarding cross-city operational policies, Xiao Ping responded that "since the 2024 Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cross-provincial autonomous driving commercial demonstration, a mutual recognition mechanism has accelerated. Provinces like Inner Mongolia have even opened up cross-city mutual recognition. For N1-class unmanned light-duty trucks, the policy path is almost entirely reused from Robotaxis, and we expect a major breakthrough in road access rights starting from the fourth quarter of this year."

Competitive stance

On the topic of market competition, He Xing stated that the current autonomous driving logistics market is still small and far from a zero-sum game. Pony AI will not enter the Robovan segment in the short term. "Pony AI has always focused on thoroughly understanding one thing before considering other opportunities," he added.
