Barclays Says Market Overreacting to CoreWeave Bond Selloff

Barclays believes the bond turmoil surrounding CoreWeave is not enough to justify panic over the health of the entire AI sector.

The bank's analysts said in a Monday report that even if the "next-generation cloud infrastructure" provider runs into more trouble, investors need not worry about a broader crisis breaking out.

Last week, yields on some of CoreWeave's bonds surged to 15%, sending the company's shares sharply lower.

However, Ajay Rajadhyaksha, Barclays' global head of research, wrote that investors have no cause for concern.

He compared the episode to another major event that once sparked market panic, one whose long-term impact ultimately proved limited and contained.

"In 2023, the market extrapolated problems at regional banks to the entire U.S. economy," he wrote in a note to investors, referring to the troubles that spring that ultimately led to the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.

"That was a misjudgment. Likewise, investors should not extrapolate CoreWeave, Inc. (ASX: CRWV)'s recent debt challenges into a view on the entire AI capital expenditure cycle."

The surprise collapse of Silicon Valley Bank fueled fears of a broader banking crisis; investors worried that banks could fail one after another, delivering a severe blow to the entire financial system.

Although sharp volatility in regional bank stocks persisted for weeks, in the end that broad fear looked overdone.

"The mistake was extrapolating the performance of a small, volatile and structurally fragile financial instrument to the entire U.S. economy," Rajadhyaksha said.

He added that the SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF, a barometer of market stress, "gave an extremely wrong signal about what was to come."

Rajadhyaksha noted that a similar situation may be playing out again: as companies continue to take on debt to fund their artificial intelligence spending, investors are growing uneasy about CoreWeave, Inc. (ASX: CRWV)'s bonds and rising borrowing costs.

"CoreWeave's unsecured bonds make up only a tiny fraction of its capital structure," he said. "CoreWeave's capital expenditure also accounts for only a small share of total AI capital expenditure. And the large cloud service providers that shoulder most of the spending do not finance themselves the same way CoreWeave does."
