US Closing Bell | S&P 500 edges higher while chip shares lead mixed finish

August 13, U.S. stocks closed mixed as traders digested fresh chip-sector optimism and a pause in the recent mega-cap rally. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.04%, the S&P 500 inched up 0.26%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 0.54%, lifted by renewed enthusiasm for memory and AI hardware names even as heavyweight growth stocks cooled.

Semiconductor plays outperformed. Micron Technology rose 4.92% after an upbeat analyst day, while Nvidia gained 3.03% and Intel advanced 3.32%. Bullish sentiment also powered leveraged ETF Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bull 3x (SOXL) up 6.89%. Super Micro Computer jumped 19.02% on continued AI-server momentum, and Marvell Technology added 2.25%. Conversely, Tesla fell 1.59% as investors rotated out of EVs; Apple slipped 0.87% and Microsoft lost 2.26% amid profit-taking; Meta Platforms declined 3.38% and Alphabet Class A eased 0.08%.

Elsewhere, memory-linked and niche tech names rallied. SanDisk climbed 5.76%, Lumentum surged 13.63% on a guidance hike, and CoreWeave advanced 19.28%. Leveraged Micron ETF (MUU) popped 9.82%, while Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) gained 7.68%. On the downside, bearish chip ETF SOXS slid 6.95%, and Palantir Technologies fell 2.23% ahead of its next software contract update.
