Taiwan has approved the allocation of NT$1.1225 trillion (US$35.3 billion) for defense for 2027, equivalent to 3.01% of gross domestic product (GDP), according to a Cabinet decision on Thursday.
Next year's overall defense budget, including the annual budget and special budgets, will exceed NT$1 trillion for the first time, the official statement said.
"Investing in defense is investing in peace; we will continue to build a stronger defense force to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region," it said.
The increase in military spending comes amid China ramping up its military and political pressure on the island nation over the past few years.
