On August 17, Micron jumped 4.1% and closed back above $1,000 after several strong sessions. But the rally was quickly tested at Tuesday’s open, with shares falling more than 4% as chip stocks pulled back.

  • Congrats to @wywy , who made $122,809 by holding Micron shares.

  • Congrats to @Ping39 , who made $42,518 by trading Micron calls.

SanDisk lit the match

The latest rally started with SanDisk. At its August 13 Investor Day, SanDisk said it expects revenue to grow at a mid-to-high-teens CAGR from FY2028 through FY2030, while long-term gross margin could stay around 80%.

The stock surged 13.7% that day, and Micron quickly followed, gaining 4.23% on August 13, 2.30% on August 14 and another 4.13% on August 17.

SanDisk is more exposed to NAND, while Micron sells DRAM, HBM and NAND. But the story is similar: AI is consuming huge amounts of memory and storage, while supply remains tight.

Strong results from CoreWeave and Super Micro have also reinforced confidence that AI infrastructure spending remains healthy.

Micron has plenty of strength of its own

Micron’s fiscal Q3 revenue reached $41.46 billion, up 346% year over year. Adjusted EPS came in at $25.11, while adjusted gross margin hit 84.9%.

The company has also said that 16 strategic customers have committed roughly $22 billion to secure future memory supply, while tight conditions in high-end memory could continue into 2027. That matters because memory has always been highly cyclical.

Micron is locking in more demand through multi-year agreements, while management says customers are still buying even at elevated memory prices. That is why investors are starting to believe this upcycle could last longer than usual.

So why did MU fall at the open?

Part of the move came from broader market weakness, with tech and semiconductor stocks under pressure.

But Micron also has a simpler problem: the stock has already run a long way.At this level, investors are no longer asking whether the business is strong. They are asking whether Micron can keep beating already-high expectations.

If AI spending stays strong and HBM and DRAM remain tight, MU could still have more upside. But if memory pricing softens or new supply comes online faster than expected, the stock could swing sharply.

Micron Reclaims $1 Trillion Market Cap — Memory Rebound or Reversal?
Memory ran hard. $MU +4.92%, SK Hynix +9.01%, $SNDK +5.76%, $SOXL +6.89%. The bull case has three legs: risk appetite after CPI, Micron management saying AI memory tightness can run past 2027 — which had UBS calling a structural reset in through-cycle profitability — and the sell side following it up. The bear case is supply and guidance: CXMT is adding capacity, and SanDisk and Western Digital both fell two sessions after beating, on outlook. Same chips, opposite conclusions — the argument isn't demand any more, it's who gets to set the price.
