The server plan is interesting, but that’s not the part I’m watching most closely.
The bigger issue for $Apple(AAPL)$ is what comes before the server.
Apple has world-class hardware, its own silicon and more than enough cash to build AI infrastructure. But on the consumer AI side, the company still hasn’t produced a product that defines its position in the current AI race.
There’s no Apple equivalent of ChatGPT sitting at the center of the ecosystem.
Instead, Apple is increasingly leaning on outside models, including Google Gemini, to strengthen the AI experience across its devices.
That creates an awkward gap.
Apple owns the device, controls the chips and runs the operating systems, but the intelligence powering many of those experiences can come from somewhere else. 🔄
Now the company is reportedly looking at enterprise AI servers built around its own M-series chips, potentially connected using $NVIDIA(NVDA)$ ’s NVLink Fusion.
That could become a legitimate hardware business. But it also raises a simple question:
If Apple is now trying to capture value from AI infrastructure, where is the AI product that brings the whole strategy together?
The server story is potentially interesting for 2029.
