$ANTHROPIC Is Proving the “Labs Can’t Have Margins” Crowd Wrong

How many times did we hear it ahead of $Anthropic(ANT)$ ’s S-1 filing? AI labs would never have sustainable margins.

The cost of serving models would eat up the revenue, making profitability impossible.

The numbers tell a different story. 👇

⚡ Compute costs per dollar of revenue plunged from $0.88 to $0.15 in just one year.

Even more striking, that improvement came while Anthropic was cutting prices per task by roughly 25–45% with each new model release. Lower prices did not prevent the company from becoming more efficient at generating revenue from its compute spending.

📉 The cost curve is moving in the opposite direction from the skeptics’ thesis.

In a more traditional cloud software business, the cost of revenue tends to grow broadly alongside revenue. Anthropic’s cost of revenue reportedly grew at just one-sixth the rate of revenue, pointing to substantial operating leverage.

💰 The reported financial figures are hard to ignore:

  • 📈 85% gross margin in H1 2026

  • 💵 21% free cash flow margin in H1 2026

  • 📊 8% free cash flow margin excluding stock-based compensation (SBC) in H1 2026

  • 🏦 8% GAAP operating margin in Q2 2026

  • 💰 $134 billion in cash, following $141 billion in total fundraising, including convertible instruments

The distinction between accounting profitability and cash generation still matters. Stock-based compensation, financing structures, and future infrastructure commitments all deserve scrutiny. But dismissing AI labs as structurally incapable of achieving attractive margins is becoming increasingly difficult to defend.

🔥 The real question is no longer simply whether AI labs can make money. It is how far their margins can expand as inference becomes more efficient, models improve, and usage scales.

Anthropic’s figures suggest that falling model prices and improving economics can coexist. The next test is whether those gains hold as competition intensifies and compute demand continues to rise.
