SpaceX, Northrop Grumman Clear First Key Tests For Trump's 'Golden Dome' Missile Interceptor Program

Deep News08-12

Companies including SpaceX and Northrop Grumman Corp., selected to develop space-based missile interceptors for President Donald Trump's $185 billion "Golden Dome" initiative, have successfully finished the first round of critical tests. This marks early progress in building the experimental defense technology.

Air Force General Michael Guetlein, who oversees the "Golden Dome" program, told reporters traveling with him during a conference on Tuesday that all participating companies will now move to the next phase of the project. This stage requires them to prove their technology can operate in the space environment.

For at least some of the contractors, the initial tests involved transmitting sensor data to the interceptors and demonstrating the propulsion systems of their spacecraft. In April, the U.S. Space Force awarded contracts to 12 different companies, including RTX Corporation, Anduril Industries Inc., and Lockheed Martin, to develop weaponized satellites designed to shoot down ballistic missiles.

The current administration has allocated $3.2 billion for this effort, with future contracts potentially reaching hundreds of billions of dollars.
