October Dips and Midterm Years: The 2026 Buy-the-Dip Playbook for the S&P 500

Everyone wants to buy the dip until it’s time to buy the dip 🤔

October hands traders a dip almost every year. So do midterm years. In 2026 they land on the same calendar, and some of the most valuable companies on Earth are trading well off their highs

THE CRASHES

1929: Dow -12.8% on Oct 28, then -11.7% the next day

1987: Dow -22.6% on Black Monday, still its worst day ever

2008: S&P -16.9% for the month as the Lehman fallout spread

A speculative bubble, a market-structure meltdown, a credit crisis. Different causes, same month, and every one of them eventually became a buying window

THE OCTOBER STATS

Typical recovery: about 4 months

Midterm Octobers: +3.0% average, green 73.7% of the time

Nobody buys the exact low, and nobody needs to. Every rebound $SPX has historically paid the people who kept buying good names on the way down

SCENARIOS

Bullish Scenario: $S&P 500(.SPX)$ holds 7600 heading into the Nov 3 midterms. Bulls can look for a push towards 7800 by mid-November, with a breakout to new ATHs opening the door towards 8000-8100. The biggest clue will be continued strength in market leaders $NEBIUS(NBIS)$ $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ $Micron Technology(MU)$ $Dell Technologies Inc.(DELL)$$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$.

As long as these names continue printing higher lows and outperforming the broader market, bulls remain in control.

Bearish Scenario: $S&P 500(.SPX)$ loses 7600 heading into Nov 3, opening the door for a deeper pullback towards 7400-7500. Rather than blindly buying the dip, look for aggressive selling, rising fear, and signs of capitulation as price approaches support. The biggest clue will be relative strength in market leaders. If $Dell Technologies Inc.(DELL)$ $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ $Micron Technology(MU)$ $SanDisk Corp.(SNDK)$ $NEBIUS(NBIS)$ hold their key levels while $S&P 500(.SPX)$ makes new lows, it could signal that selling pressure is exhausting and a bottom is forming.

Whatever happens, give the market time to work itself out. You don’t need to catch the exact bottom to capitalize on the next move.
