Meta Beat Earnings. The Stock Fell Anyway. I Think the Market Is Focusing on the Wrong Number.

$Meta Platforms, Inc.(META)$

Meta delivered what investors wanted on the top line.

Q3 revenue beat expectations, growth remained around 26% year over year, ad impressions increased 11%, ad pricing increased another 11%, and Q4 guidance came in slightly ahead of expectations.

Yet META is indicated around $678 pre-market, down roughly 3%.

Why?

Because investors are no longer asking whether Meta's AI strategy is working.

They are asking how much it will cost.

🟢 THE AI MONETISATION ENGINE IS WORKING

This is the part I would not lose sight of.

Meta has one of the clearest AI monetisation loops in the market:

Better AI recommendations → more engagement → more ad impressions → better targeting → higher advertiser returns → more ad spending.

Both impressions and pricing rising 11% is particularly encouraging.

Meta is not simply showing users more advertisements.

It is simultaneously increasing inventory and extracting better pricing.

That tells me demand remains healthy.

And Meta now has another potential distribution layer developing through its AI products and growing user ecosystem.

So the growth problem is not what worries me.

🔴 THE $6.22B NUMBER THE MARKET CANNOT IGNORE

Meta reported approximately $6.22B of negative free cash flow.

That changes the conversation.

AI infrastructure requires enormous spending on GPUs, data centres, networking, power and talent.

Management is effectively asking shareholders:

Give us today's cash flow so we can build tomorrow's AI infrastructure.

That is acceptable if future earnings grow faster because of it.

It becomes dangerous if capex keeps accelerating while incremental returns begin slowing.

This is why I think free cash flow is now the metric to watch, not simply revenue growth.

🔵 META'S ADVANTAGE OVER MANY AI PLAYS

There is one major reason I remain constructive.

Meta does not need to wait years for AI to create revenue.

It already owns enormous monetisation engines through Facebook, Instagram, Reels and WhatsApp.

That makes Meta fundamentally different from companies building AI infrastructure first and hoping monetisation arrives later.

Meta can fund AI using an existing advertising machine.

The question is whether that machine can keep growing fast enough to fund another huge investment year without compressing valuation.

For now, I think it can.

But investors will demand evidence.

🚦 MY META LEVELS

With META around $678 pre-market:

🟡 $670-$690: FIRST PICK

We are effectively here.

🟢 $640-$660: PREFERRED PICK

This is where I become more interested.

🟢 $600-$625: STRONG PICK

Attractive if advertising fundamentals remain intact.

🟡 $710-$725: FIRST RECOVERY

🟢 Above $730: BULLISH CONFIRMATION

Then I would target $760-$780.

🟢 $800+: BULL EXTENSION

🔴 Below $600: THESIS CHECK

🔮 MY NEXT 2-4 WEEK OUTLOOK

🟡 50% BASE CASE: $650-$720

Investors digest the revenue beat against the cash-flow concerns.

The stock consolidates while the market decides how much AI capex it is willing to tolerate.

🟢 30% BULL CASE: $730-$780

Investors conclude that strong advertising growth justifies aggressive AI investment.

A reclaim of $730 would be important.

🔴 20% BEAR CASE: $600-$650

Capex and free-cash-flow concerns dominate, particularly if the broader technology market weakens.

I would become much more interested around $640 if the advertising engine remains healthy.

THE NUMBER I WOULD WATCH NEXT

Not revenue.

Not daily active users.

Not even EPS.

Free cash flow.

I want to see the trajectory eventually turn:

AI investment → better products → stronger monetisation → higher cash generation.

If Meta proves that loop, today's spending becomes an investment.

If cash burn persists without accelerating returns, it becomes a valuation problem.

MY CALL

I remain bullish on Meta fundamentally, but more price-sensitive after this report.

The pre-market decline does not scare me because the underlying business did not suddenly stop growing.

In fact, the advertising numbers remain strong.

The market is simply demanding a higher standard:

Show me the return on all this AI spending.

At roughly $678, I would consider a starter position.

At $640-$660, I become considerably more interested.

Above $730, I would treat the recovery as confirmed.

Meta has already proved AI can improve engagement and advertising.

Its next challenge is harder:

Prove that AI can grow faster than the cost of building it.

If Meta does that, I think $800 eventually becomes much more than an optimistic target.

I am not a financial advisor. Trade wisely, Comrades!

META at $678: buying the dip, waiting for $650, or worried about the cash burn?

  • That 23% AI cost growth is exactly the number the market should care about. Ads are holding up, but spend is outrunning revenue now lol
