Because the employment-to-population ratio was 61.1% before the pandemic hit in February 2020, but it was still only 58% in June, this figure needs to stabilize to above 59% for policymakers to discuss tapering bond purchases.</p><p>James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Federal Reserve, hinted that the time is near to begin scaling back bond purchases. \"I don't need to start tomorrow, but I think we're ready,\" he said in an interview.</p><p>Central bank policymakers in other countries are less hesitant.
