Shopping While Still Learning About Stocks – My Relaxing Day at Johor Premium Outlets

One thing I enjoy about investing is that it doesn’t stop when the stock market closes. Whether I’m relaxing over coffee, travelling, or shopping across the border, I find myself observing businesses differently. Every shopping trip becomes an opportunity to understand how companies attract customers, how brands build loyalty, and why some businesses continue growing year after year.

Recently, I spent a relaxing day at Johor Premium Outlets (JPO). It wasn’t just about hunting for bargains—it was also a chance to think like an investor while enjoying the day with family.

🛍️ Starting the Day at Johor Premium Outlets

Johor Premium Outlets remains one of my favourite places for a short getaway from Singapore.

The atmosphere is comfortable, with wide walkways, plenty of greenery, and many international brands gathered in one location. Even on a weekday there were shoppers walking around, looking for discounts and seasonal promotions.

Walking through the outlet reminded me that retail is much more than simply selling products. Every store competes for customer attention through promotions, store layouts, customer service and product quality.

As an investor, these are things I enjoy observing.

👟 Visiting Skechers

$Skechers USA(SKX)$

One of the first stores I visited was Skechers.

The store was busy, with shelves full of walking shoes, running shoes and the popular Hands Free Slip-ins collection.

I noticed many families trying on different pairs, especially older shoppers looking for comfortable footwear.

As someone interested in investing, this made me think beyond today’s sales.

Instead of asking:

“Should I buy these shoes?”

I also ask:

“Can this company continue attracting customers for many years?”

Skechers has built a reputation around comfort and value. Unlike brands competing mainly on performance sportswear, Skechers focuses heavily on everyday walking, casual wear and comfort, serving a broad customer base.

That consistency is one reason many investors continue following the company.

👡 Buying Birkenstock Sandals

This trip also gave me the opportunity to pick up a pair of Birkenstock sandals.

The soft lavender colour immediately caught my attention, and after trying them on, they felt extremely comfortable.

Birkenstock has become much more than a simple sandal company.

Its cork footbed, timeless designs and loyal customer following have transformed it into a premium lifestyle brand.

Unlike fast fashion, Birkenstock focuses on durability and comfort.

Customers often return years later to buy another pair because they already trust the product.

As an investor, repeat customers are something I always appreciate seeing.

Strong brands usually enjoy pricing power and customer loyalty, two qualities that can support long-term business growth.

📈 Looking Beyond Shopping

Shopping itself is enjoyable.

But I also like asking myself questions such as:

* Why are some stores always crowded?

* Why are customers willing to pay premium prices?

* Why do certain brands continue expanding globally?

These observations don’t replace financial statements or earnings reports.

However, they help me better understand the business behind the stock ticker.

Sometimes the best research begins simply by walking into a store.

🏢 Thinking About Genting While Visiting JPO

Many visitors may not realise that Johor Premium Outlets sits within a development associated with the Genting group through its property interests.

This reminds me that Genting is much more than casinos.

The wider Genting group has interests that include hospitality, property development, integrated resorts and tourism-related businesses across different markets.

Developments that attract visitors help support nearby retail outlets, hotels, restaurants and entertainment businesses.

When more visitors arrive, many surrounding businesses can also benefit.

That is one interesting aspect of investing.

Sometimes growth comes from an entire ecosystem rather than one single business.

🏨 A Comfortable and Affordable Hotel Stay

One thing I always enjoy about Johor is that accommodation can be very affordable.

For the price of a basic room in Singapore, I can often find a much larger hotel room in Johor.

That allows me to slow down instead of rushing back after shopping.

A comfortable hotel also means I can enjoy dinner, walk around in the evening and continue exploring the outlet area the next morning.

Sometimes investing is about patience.

Travelling reminds me that life should also be enjoyed while building wealth for the future.

🍗 Enjoying Some Great Food

No trip would be complete without good food.

We stopped for grilled chicken served with fresh cucumber, onions and dipping sauces.

Simple meals often become the most memorable.

The food court around JPO also offers plenty of local choices, making it easy to find something for everyone.

Whether it’s Malaysian favourites, noodles or grilled dishes, there are many affordable options compared with similar meals across the border.

🍛 A Visit to Madam Kwan’s

Another highlight was eating at Madam Kwan’s.

The restaurant is well known for serving Malaysian favourites in a comfortable setting.

One reason I enjoy restaurants like this is consistency.

Customers know what to expect each time they visit.

Good service, familiar flavours and clean surroundings encourage repeat business.

As investors, consistency matters.

Whether it’s a restaurant or a listed company, customers returning again and again usually indicate a business is doing something right.

💡 Investing Lessons From Shopping

Many people separate shopping from investing.

I actually think they complement each other.

When I visit shopping centres, I observe:

* Customer traffic

* Queue lengths

* Store layouts

* Product pricing

* Promotions

* Customer behaviour

These observations help me understand whether a company appears healthy from a consumer perspective.

Of course, this is only one piece of the puzzle.

I still rely on financial reports, earnings, margins and cash flow before making investment decisions.

But seeing real customers buying products provides valuable perspective.

📚 Learning Never Stops

One lesson I’ve learned is that investing doesn’t only happen behind a computer screen.

Learning happens everywhere.

It happens inside shopping malls.

It happens during holidays.

It happens while drinking coffee.

Every experience teaches me something about businesses, customer behaviour and consumer trends.

The more businesses I observe, the better I understand how companies generate revenue and create value over the long term.

😊 Enjoying Today While Investing for Tomorrow

This trip reminded me that life is about balance.

I enjoy researching stocks.

I enjoy writing about investing.

But I also enjoy spending time with family, finding bargains, eating good food and exploring new places.

Walking around Johor Premium Outlets with my new Birkenstock sandals, browsing Skechers, enjoying affordable meals and staying in a comfortable hotel made for a relaxing day away from the markets.

At the same time, every store I entered became another lesson in investing.

Great companies are built one customer at a time.

Whether it is Skechers selling comfortable shoes, Birkenstock building a premium global brand, or Genting helping develop destinations that attract visitors, each business tells a different story.

That is why I enjoy combining travel with investing. The stock market may close at the end of the trading day, but the opportunity to learn about great businesses never really stops.Find out more here: SocGen 0 commission
